Wearing an Emerald Green Dress on My Birthday Cost Me My Husband

“I remember,” Jake said, but he did not look at the menu.

Jake was looking at his father’s hands, then at mine, and then back to the lobby doors.

The waitress approached our table, her notepad ready, a polite smile on her face as she looked at the five of us.

“Good evening,” she said. “Are we celebrating a special occasion tonight?”

Damon looked up from his menu, his smile widening as he gestured toward me.

“My beautiful wife is turning fifty today,” Damon said, his voice carrying easily to the neighboring tables.

The waitress turned to me, her eyes lingering on the emerald green dress for a second before she smiled.

“Well, happy birthday,” she said. “You look absolutely stunning.”

“Thank you,” I said, the word catching in my throat as I looked at Damon, who was already looking back down at his menu with a steady hand.

Damon picked up his menu with a steady hand, smiling at the children as if he is the perfect husband.
