“I can change!”
“Maybe you can. But not with me.”
“I love you, Sofia!”
She looked at him quietly.
“No, Javier. You loved how comfortable your life was when I was paying the bills.”
“I’ll cut my mother off! I’ll give up my stake in the estate! Whatever you want!”
Teresa screamed his name.
Sofia shook her head.
“You’re still offering things because you’re afraid of losing everything.”
She walked toward the door.
Teresa followed her.
“What about Mariana’s wedding?!”
Sofia looked back.
“Whoever is getting married can pay for it.”
“The invitations have already been sent!”
“That doesn’t make your daughter’s expenses my responsibility.”
“You’re going to make her look like a fool!”
Sofia met Teresa’s eyes.
“You left me in a storm to teach me my place. Now everyone here can learn theirs.”
Then she walked outside.
Her best friend, Clara, waited at the end of the driveway in a rented sedan with the heater running.
That evening, from her executive office in Manhattan, Sofia made four calls.
