The housekeepers weren’t allowed inside.
He locked the bedroom door for nearly half an hour.
When he finally came out, he always looked slightly tired.
Almost as though he had finished something far more difficult than sweeping.
Whenever I joked about what was hidden beneath the bed, he simply kissed my forehead.
“Some things are better left alone.”
Eventually, I stopped asking.
Life gave me plenty of distractions.
Elegant dinners.
Weekend trips.
Jewelry that sparkled under restaurant lights.
People constantly told me how lucky I was.
Obinna loved introducing me as his beautiful wife.
“My greatest blessing,” he would proudly tell everyone.
There was only one thing that unsettled me.
Some nights I woke to find him standing silently beside the bed.
He never turned on the lights.
He simply stared toward the floor for several long minutes before climbing back beside me.
The first time I asked why, he smiled.
“I pray over our marriage every night.”
